Solar® ECG/Respiration Modules General Information

Marquette's new ECG/Respiration modules were designed for single parameter ECG monitoring in the Solar 7000/8000 monitors: ECG/Respiration, ECG/Respiration with Defib Sync, ECG/Respiration with 12SLTM, and ECG/Respiration with Defib Sync and 12SL.

ECG/RESP

All four modules acquire signals from either 3 or 5 leadwire patient cables. Using the 5 leadwire cable allows for simultaneous multi-lead analysis, a hallmark of Marquette ECG and arrhythmia analysis. Modules equipped with the 12SL option and a 10 leadwire patient cable, offer a diagnostic quality 12 lead analysis on demand or at predetermined intervals with hard copy printout or transmission to Marquette's MUSE® storage system.

True simultaneous multi-lead analysis is an algorithm that allows for continuous, uninterrupted monitoring. During a lead-fail situation, the monitor will automatically switch to the next valid lead without relearning or establishing a new, dominant template. This "smart" lead-fail feature, unique to Marquette, allows for continuous arrhythmia detection.

The detection and identification of arrhythmias uses a precise algorithm that combines the best of two techniques-feature extraction and template matching/cross correlation. The system classifies each beat into one of 10 classifications and makes the following arrhythmia calls: Asystole, VFIB/VTAC, VT>2, V Brady, Acc Ventricular, Pause, Tachy, Brady, Couplet, Bigeminy, Trigeminy, R on T, PVC and Irregular. This method minimizes the extent to which noise and timing variation contribute to false calls.

Software in Solar 7000/8000 monitors provides many other key features of Marquette ECG/RESP monitoring. These include: (1) ST segment analysis and trending, (2) user-adjustable arrhythmia, heart rate and PVC/minute alarms and (3) pacemaker detection-to reduce the possibility of false QRS detection, the module removes artifact generated by most incoming pacemaker spikes, then enhances the spikes on the display so that they can be easily seen.

The Respiration feature uses constant current impedance pneumography for deriving respiration rate noninvasively. The Solar 7000/8000 monitor contains a sophisticated three-alarm structure that provides comprehensive monitoring of patient breathing. The system has a rate alarm that sounds if the number of breaths falls beyond user-selected upper or lower limits. In addition, the system's apnea alarm warns clinicians that the patient has not taken a breath during a specific time period. An automatic or manual gain control is available for adjusting the size of the respiration signal on the screen.

An improved design reduces the effect of baseline drift on the detection of respiration signals, so that respiration waveforms may be differentiated from artifact caused by patient movement, for example. The sensitivity threshold may be adjusted as required by the patient's breathing cycle.

The respiration waveform and the current respiratory rate are displayed on the bedside monitor. Either lead I (across the thorax) or lead II (across the diaphragm) may be selected to optimize the amplitude of the impedance signal.

DEFIB SYNC

This option allows for synchronous cardioversion and ECG analog output. Marker pulse amplitude and width are user selectable from on-screen menus.

12SLTM ECGAnalysis Program

In its second decade, the Marquette 12SL ECG analysis program continues to evolve, using a database of clinically correlated ECGs. The result is a program of uncompromising quality and proven reliability in the collection and interpretation of ECG data. Over the years frequent testing against the database is responsible for the gains made in rhythm, conduction, hypertrophy and infarction detection.
